Nutrition is such an important, if not the most important factor to being healthy. Being a new local myself, I've found it difficult to scroll through the many pages of yelp to find some new, delicious, and healthy alternative markets and restaurants to ya know, fuel my body so that I can feel good from my head tomatoes. So, here's a tool for you! I've created a list of some of the top choices categorized by what area you decide to plant your roots in and still keep your body radishing!
Top Places to Fill Your Fridge & Pantry
Markets
Being a college student and working part time, doesn't leave the greatest budget, so leaning towards Ramen or a McChicken everyday is easy to do. However, I've found some excellent places that offer deals where I don't have to succumb to a high fat and high sodium diet. Here's the top markets I shop at that offer cheap produce, snacks, meats, as well as alternative options for my vegans and vegetarians.
1) Sprouts Farmers Market
Centennial Hills, Summerlin, Spring Valley (other locations)
This place is a God send! Coming from a place where agriculture was the number one source of economy for my home town, it was difficult to find a place that could offer my 3 for $1 mangoes or 4 for $1 avocados. Not to say they offer these deals every day, but, when produce is in season, they sure don't keep the yummy veggies and fruits to just die in the back to make profit. Not only is the produce super fresh, but, it's also affordable! Look out for their weekly ads where they post what deals they're featuring and save your trip to Vons or Smiths and come here instead.
For my vegans and vegetarians the produce isles are amazing and their frozen section offers a large selection of Gardein or Quorn products for the cheapest I've seen compared to other grocery stores. And for my gluten sensitive readers, they sell baked goods and an array of frozen selections including pizza and pasta!
Make sure to stop and look for the bulk foods area that provides an array of nuts, dried fruits bean, and rice with you in control of how much you want to purchase. Something I rotate out twice a month is their own fresh peanut butter, not that other stuff that has the same ingredients as packaged icing, unsalted please! They also offer packaged items that are made by them including canned beans, olive oil, cereal, etc. They also offer an array of vitamins and supplements!
So, if you're looking for a place with a large selection of ingredients and produce, this is the place! You can shop here all whilst saving some of that green in your own pocket.
2) Trader Joe's
Centennial Hills, Summerlin, Summerlin West, Henderson, and Eastern
When you're looking for convenience but, still looking to watch your waistline I highly suggest picking up a packaged salad or wrap in the produce isle. Back when I first started college I'd have an hour break in between my classes. That left enough time to drive to wherever I wanted to eat, fight traffic back, find parking where it sometimes felt like everyone else was approaching school at the same time and walk the long trek to my next class. Thus, I turned to a quick run into Trader Joe's.
When first entering Trader Joe's it's so hard to not feel welcomed and an overwhelming excitement to just be there. Usually the first site are the vibrant colors of the produce and flowers for sale. Honestly, there's just something so unexplainable about the place that just feels good! They sell an extremely large selection of their own products. From hummus to so many, and when I say so many I mean so many SNACKS that are so scrumptious. Not to mention their own spices, cold pressed juices, coffee, and sauces, the list goes on and on! Plus what I love, is gaining new idea's for meal preps when they give out samples !
Thus, when you're looking for fast and budget friendly with an enormous selection of signature products to fill your fridge or your pantry, this is the place to turn to.
Top Places to Grab a Bite to Eat
Restaurants
We all can relate to how busy we get sometimes thus, the option for cooking at home are nearly impossible. Here is a list of my favorite spots to eat post workout here in beautiful Las Vegas!
1) Vegenation
West Las Vegas & Henderson
|"Fresh Global Street Food That Makes You Feel Really Damn Good" - Vegenation
I'm not a vegan or a vegetarian myself, however, I can get down with any good meal. Vegenation offers generous portions and you can hardly even tell that everything from the sauces to the main entree is all 100% plant based! They work with local small businesses to source everything from their beer to cheese, seasonal herbs and even their art! Some of my favorites has to be the buffalo cauliflower with any of their house made dipping sauces and when I'm feeling a little daring the brownie sundae made out of avocado and nut butter is a must have!
2) The Protein Source
Summerlin & Henderson
|"The Passion for Healthy Cooking" - The Protein Source
Think, grub that you don't have to feel guilty about. Wild caught and free range! You can have proteins savory and or sweet. They have a breakfast menu that's served all day and you can get anything from pancakes to burgers, bowls, wraps and salads! They're fast, friendly, and affordable too which is a huge plus. Peanut butter power balls are not only delicious they are a great source of fats and protiens but, be quick to get your hands on two or even five of them because they sell out quick! Last but not least, all of their protein shakes are sure to bring all the boys to the yard.
3) Rachel's Kitchen
Summerlin, Warm Springs, Centennial Hills, Hualapai (other locations)
"Wholesome Food. Delicious Recipes." -Rachel's Kitchen
With eight locations in Las Vegas this ever growing chain offers fresh-squeezed juices, hormone free grilled chicken breast as well as many options for salad, sandwiches, and wraps.
